More About Memphis in May
Memphis in May's World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is May 14-16, 2009 in Tom Lee Park in downtown Memphis. Hundreds of teams compete for over $90,000 in prizes and supreme bragging rights. Teams adorn their areas with elaborate decoration, trophies attesting to their boasting rights, and as one can imagine, clever and creative team names.

While grilling is the main theme, the contest wouldn't be complete without the Ms. Piggie Idol competition where grown men dress in tutus and snouts and women kick their heels (hooves) up. There is also a t-shirt competition and even a best booth contest.

January/February 2010 Grillin' Recipe: Pulled Pork on Toasted Buns

It's cold outside but that's no excuse for the true blooded barbeque fanatic.  We just move it indoors, right?  So let's get cooking!  This pulled pork is so easy and convenient to prepare and cook in the slow cooker. Serve the shredded pork on toasted buns with slaw, pickles, and extra barbecue sauce.

  • 1 pork shoulder roast
  • grill seasoning (steak, burger, or spicy chicken)
  • Juice of 2 limes or about 1/4 cup of apple juice
  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeded, coarsely chopped
  • 2 to 3 cups barbecue sauce, or to taste

Put about half of the onions in the slow cooker. Place the pork roast on the onions and sprinkle generously with grill seasoning. Top with the remaining onions and peppers and drizzle with the lime juice.  Cover and cook on HIGH for 6 hours. Remove the roast and vegetables and shred. Discard juices and return the shredded pork to the slow cooker. Add barbecue sauce, cover, and cook on LOW for about 1 hour. Serve on toasted buns with coleslaw and pickles. Serves 8 to 10.
